We arrived Thursday Morning. We were only missing one person and the rental car pick up went smoothly- for the most part. We were off from Rome to Carmignano to visit Enrico Pierazzuoli just outside of Florence in one of Italy’s smallest DOCs- Carmignano. Go ahead try to name more than 3 Carmignano producers.
Enrico only uses Sangiovese and Cabernet (traditional since the 18th Century) in his Carmignano wines– though other grapes like syrah and merlot are permitted. Most don’t know that Carmignano overlaps with another growing zone – Chianti Montalbano. For these wines Enrico makes fruity and well balanced wines soley from Sangiovese. It was the high quality in these wines that led us to Pierazzuoli in the first place. In Italy the winery is known as Cantegallo. For fear of legal action from an unnamed American winery– take a wild guess — they use their family name in the US -Pierazzuoli. The estate name for the Carmignano is Le Farnete.
We took a quick look at the vineyards, tasted with Enrico and had a light lunch at their osteria. Then it was time to hit the pool and take a short nap while we waited for Paul from Sofia’s to catch up to us via train.
Once we collected Paul we were headed to the home of Luca d’Attoma and Elena Celli owners of Duemani, just outside of the town of Lucca. Here we tasted through their current releases.
2010 CiFra (100% cabernet franc), 2009 Altrovino (50% Cab Fran 50% Merlot), 2008 Duemani Duemani (100% cab franc and one of the best wines I’ve tasted from Luca), 2008 Suisassi (100% Syrah).
